Lake Erie-2021-2025 -> 5.0 Environmental Objectives

Lake Erie-2021-2025 5.0 Environmental Objectives

  • Lower Trophic Levels
  • Habitat
5.1

Regional nutrient reduction strategies to reduce phosphorus loading and achieve mesotrophic conditions in the western, central, and nearshore waters of the eastern basins and embayments.

Productivity across all basins of Lake Erie during 2021–2025 decreased slightly. Only the central basin was consistently within the targeted mesotrophic productivity range for the entire reporting period.

5.2

Increase shoreline/nearshore complexity through softening of shorelines, rehabilitation of connected coastal wetlands, and increases in submerged aquatic vegetation.

Identification of functional habitats that support fish stocks was completed prior to 2021. Work to further refine and visualize functional habitats was ongoing from 2021-2025. This work continues to be used to prioritize potential habitat actions, funding decisions, and research priorities in the Lake Erie basin.
